Dr. Maria Scouros is the founder of the
Houston Cancer Institute, PA, having received her training in Medical
Oncology at M D Anderson Cancer Center. She is Board Certified in
Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.
Dr. Scouros received her medical school training at the
Royal Free
Hospital Medical School of the University of London, England, in 1973,
and completed Internships in England and residencies in Internal
Medicine in Greece, before coming to Houston, Texas, to study Medical
Oncology at M. D. Anderson Hospital Cancer Center, where she was
involved in patient care, as well as clinical and basic research, and
held the position of Assistant Professor of Medicine, Assistant
Internist. During that time, she also studied at the Graduate School of
Biomedical Sciences, University of Texas.
In 1984, she left M. D. Anderson to develop the Houston Cancer
Institute, PA. The main campus of the Houston Cancer Institute, PA.,
located in the Memorial - West Houston area, provides state-of-the-art
care for the cancer patients in their own community. She was also
appointed Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of
Texas Health Science Center during this time.
She has brought to her patients new and effective therapies for multiple
cancers, multiple treatment modalities, including autologous bone marrow
transplantation, Interleukin and LAK cell therapies. Most, recently,
she has begun targeted therapies and continues to bring effective new
treatment modalities to her patients. She brought an emphasis on early
detection and prevention through education programs. Dr Scouros
continues this tradition with providing access to clinical trials for
the patients who may choose to participate in them.
Dr Scouros has been very active in the medical community and has served
in multiple organizations, including The Harris County Medical Society
Medical Director Committee and Board of Socio-Economics; Chair,
Reference Committee on Socioeconomics Texas Medical Association; as a
Member of the International Association of Comparative Research of
Leukemia and Related Diseases; Leukemia Society of America - Texas Gulf
Coast Chapter, Board of Trustees; Mayor’s Task Force on AIDs; Houston
Oncology Research Group; Chair, Heritage Physicians’ Networks. She is a
member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). She
received the Susan Komen Award for patient commitment and community
involvement by raising medical consciousness and working toward a cure
for breast cancer.
Dr Scouros has also been active in the community providing and
organizing educational programs for both patients, the
community-at-large, and the medical community. She appears on TV to
speak about cancer related programs and treatments and speaks at local
medical support groups and professional seminars. She has been
quoted as an international cancer specialist in the press.
Dr. Scouros maintains privileges at local area hospitals at
Memorial
City Memorial Herman Hospital,
St.
Luke’s Hospital, and selected other hospitals. Dr. Scouros is a
member of the
MD Anderson Associates.
